Traumatic brain injury is a type of brain damage that occurs due to sudden trauma. Car accidents, truck accidents, sports injuries, vehicle accidents, and other accidents can all lead to this type of injury. Some traumatic brain injuries are mild and leave no lasting effects, but others are very serious injuries with long-term consequences.

The most common type of brain injury is a concussion, which is caused by a sudden blow to the head. Some people lose consciousness immediately after their injuries occur, but others do not display the typical symptoms of a concussion. In most cases, someone with a concussion recovers in a few days or a few weeks. In rare cases, concussions can cause long-term problems with speech, movement, and learning. Repeated concussions, such as those sustained while playing football, increase the risk for long-term brain damage.

Penetrating injuries are another common type of traumatic brain injury. A penetrating injury occurs when a foreign object enters the brain. The effects of a penetrating injury depend on which areas of the brain are damaged by the foreign object. These injuries may cause problems with learning or communicating with others. People who experience penetrating injuries may also have difficulty remembering things.
